"Unless and until . . . the future of the world becomes more important
than the future of the church, the church has no future.
"Ralph Winters
"The church is under orders. Evangelistic inactivity is disobedience"
John R. W. Stott
God: "A true witness delivereth souls" (Proverbs 14:25).
"Jesus said 'Go,' but the church through selfishness and indifference has refused to obey.
We try to substitute 'write,' 'send,' or 'give,' for 'go.' We try to salve our conscience by turning over the task of 'going' to someone else and giving languidly for their support.
Of course, we must send where we cannot go. But because we can't go across the world does not excuse us for refusing to go across the street." R. C. Foster
“Often we will do anything for the Lord short of actually obeying Him. For example, we will hear His command to “Go and preach the gospel” . And we immediately we say, ”Yes, Lord” and go off to a conference on evangelism", Colin Dye (Kensington Temple, London, England) in The True Nature of Revival.
Spurgeon: If a man can be content without being a soul winner, let him seek to have the stone taken out of his heart that he may feel for perishing men.
Spurgeon: A minister who is a mere man pleaser is a soul destroyer.
Spurgeon: Men who conquer go in for attack
"The possession of the good news of the gospel involves the obligation to share it." William Barclay
"There is not the slightest hint in the New Testament that evangelism is the special prerogative or responsibility of office bearers. We are to be burdened for men's souls not because any office requires it of us but because we are Christians." Ian H. Murray
"If a professed Christian does not witness for the Lord, then I either have to question their sincerity regarding their claim, or their biblical knowledge regarding evangelism. It is impossible to "love one's brother" (1 Jn 3:11-18) and not want to save their soul from everlasting torment" R. Christopher
Bruce Atkinson on George Whitfield in Land of Hope and Glory:
He was the first to see that Christ’s ministers must do the work of fishermen. They must not wait for souls to come to them, but must go after souls, and ‘compel them to come in’.
He did not sit tamely by his fireside, like a cat on a rainy day, mourning over the wickedness of the land. He went forth to challenge the devil in his high places. He attacked sin and wickedness face to face, and gave them no peace. He dived into holes and corners after sinners.
"The salvation of a single soul is more important than the production or preservation of all the epics and tragedies in the world." C. S. Lewis
In the last decades of the 20th century, Europe’s churches lost 4,200 members each day. There was a 2% decline in Christanity in Europe between the years of 1970 and 1980. And from 1980 to 2000 the decline was around 10%.
So-called vibrant churches, which boast larger numbers than other churches, are often isolated and insular. They attract people to their services through spectacular programmes, mass publicity and outstanding spiritual gifts but they fail to mobilise their people. They breed a generation of consumer Christians who are drawn to conferences and conventions but never become true disciples of Jesus.
Colin Dye (Kensington Temple, London, England).
"If you want your neighbor to know what Christ will do for him, let the neighbor see what Christ has done for you." Henry Ward Beecher
William Booth:
As when a man from the shore, seeing another struggling in the water, takes off those outer garments that would hinder his efforts and leaps to the rescue, so will you who still linger on the bank, thinking and singing and praying about the poor perishing souls, lay aside your shame, your pride, your cares about other people’s opinions, your love of ease, and all the selfish loves that have kept you back for so long, and rush to the rescue of this multitude of dying men and women?
You must do it! You cannot hold back. You have enjoyed yourself in Christianity long enough. You have had pleasant feelings, pleasant songs, pleasant meetings, pleasant prospects. There has been much of human happiness, much clapping of hands and shouting of praises, very much of heaven on earth. ……………………………..
“You cannot walk with the Lord and ignore His chief passion – souls”
Colin Dye in The True Nature of Revival
